FWC FISH AND WILDLIFE RESEARCH INSTITUTE: Manatee Rescue After Hurricane Ian

Manatee

Fwc Fish And Wildlife Research Institute issued the following announcement on Oct. 14.

Manatee Rescue After Hurricane Ian

Last week, wildlife biologists at our Southwest Field Lab received a report of a manatee entrapped in a retention pond system in Lee County, Fort Myers near Billy Creek. The manatee was rescued on Friday in good condition by our marine mammal rescue team, and it was then transported a few miles away to the Orange River where it was released.

The manatee was able to access the retention pond system during Hurricane Ian when water levels were high from excessive rain and storm surge and became trapped after levels began to recede. See an animal in need? You can help by reporting any sick, injured, orphaned, or entrapped manatees to our Wildlife Alert hotline at (888) 404-3922.

All activities conducted under U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permit #MA770191
