FWC FISH AND WILDLIFE RESEARCH INSTITUTE: While recently in the field, our Florida grasshopper sparrow crew captured video of a rarely seen event

Bird1

Fwc Fish And Wildlife Research Institute issued the following announcement on May 04.

While recently in the field, our Florida grasshopper sparrow crew captured video of a rarely seen event -- mating burrowing owls!

Named the 2022 American Birding Association #BirdOfTheYear, burrowing owls are pint-sized birds that live in open, treeless areas. Unlike most other owls, these long-legged birds are active day and night and spend most of their time close to the ground or even underground where they nest in burrows.

In Eastern North America they are found only in Florida, where this subspecies (Athene cunicularia floridana) is state listed as Threatened. Their typical breeding season is mid-February to mid-July. Females will lay up to eight eggs and incubate them for up to 28 days.
