St. Petersburg Police Department issued the following announcement on Oct. 19.

Traffic Operation

During our monthly traffic enforcement operation yesterday, officers handed out more than 170 speeding tickets to drivers in the city's western zone.

Members of the Traffic Unit and Community Service Officers targeted the following three roads in District 3:

 1st Avenue North

 49th Street North

 38th Avenue North

Officers issued the most number of tickets - 118 - to drivers traveling 15 to 30 miles per hour above the posted speed limit, followed by 24 tickets to motorists traveling 10 to 14 mph above the speed limit.

This operation is conducted in addition to our daily traffic enforcement throughout the city and school zones. Our goal is not to punish drivers but to make our streets safe for all drivers and pedestrians.

The next operation is tentative for November, and it will focus on the north side of the city.
