Fwc Fish And Wildlife Research Institute issued the following announcement on Dec. 08.
We are working closely with USFWS to expand response efforts to the manatee unusual mortality event along the Atlantic coast. After thorough science, policy and legal reviews, and substantial coordination, FWC and USFWS leadership recently approved the establishment of a Temporary Field Response Station in Brevard County. The Response Station will support ongoing manatee conservation efforts in the central Indian River Lagoon. In addition, a small-scale feeding trial will be conducted by FWC and USFWS staff during the winter months to help reduce manatee mortalities and the number of animals in need of rescue.
Partnerships are crucial in our response, and thanks to Florida Power & Light Company, in partnership with the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida, these efforts also include a new manatee rescue and transport truck to support our manatee response team, as well as funding for habitat restoration and grants for partner organizations that do great work in support of manatees.
