Greater Pinellas Point Civic Association issued the following announcement on Dec. 09.
GPPCA congratulates the 'mystery winner' of the 2021 Community Water Wise Award!
Congratulations to St. Pete’s 2021
Community Water Wise Award Winner!
We have a winner! There were many entries, but this homeowner in the Greater Pinellas Point Civic Association neighborhood showed that proper planning (trial and error included), reuse of materials and various stormwater management techniques can create and attractive, functional and water saving landscape. This family received an attractive stained glass stepping-stone and colorful yard flag to celebrate their accomplishment.
To capture and direct stormwater on their property, this couple created slightly depressed swales within their pathways and collect rainwater from their two-story house into many rain barrels. Repurposed rocks and roofing tiles edge the beds to help hold the soil and yard waste mulch in place and direct rainwater. The lawn has been replaced with drought-tolerant groundcovers and other flowering plants for pollinators as well as shade-tolerant plants under the live oaks and pine trees.
The annual Tampa Bay Community Water Wise Award is awarded to curators of attractive, water-efficient landscapes that conserve water and protect the environment. Individuals and businesses can apply to be recognized for their yard's beauty and resiliency. To apply, view more images of winning yards, or receive more information, visit this webpage.
