Florida Suncoast Sierra Club recently issued the following announcement.
TL;DR: we're celebrating!
This is an informal event and all are welcome. Potential, active, and past volunteers are especially encouraged to join us.
----
Election Day 2021 was a big one for the City of St Petersburg.
Suncoast Sierra Club endorsed a slate of candidates in the St Pete Municipal Election: mayor and 4 councilmember races. Each race indicates an enormous amount of volunteer time spent on research, crafting questionnaires, interviewing candidates, communicating endorsement decisions to the public, and supporting endorsees in their candidacy. Dozens of volunteers poured their skills and effort into this election cycle and the results reflect that.
One hundred percent of our endorsed candidates won their races. That's a first in our group's history! While that's plenty cause for celebration, there are other firsts to recognize, too.
St Pete just elected our first Black mayor, our first Hispanic councilmember, and the first Black councilmember representing a district north of Central Avenue. These are big milestones for St Pete.
Each and every endorsee promised to fight for the environment. Whether it be through a clean energy transition, or preserving our remaining green space, or fighting to end recurrent and devastating red tides, these elected officials have their sights set on environmental protection for both natural and human spaces. We'll be there every step of the way.
These successes did not occur overnight. Over the last 8 years, dedicated Sierra activists were present. Developing authentic relationships, expanding coalitions, training volunteers, assembling teams, fundraising, strategizing with partners, and having fun with like minded people: all to leverage our true political power. Today we laud activists throughout Tampa Bay. Thank you for your work!
What does this mean for you, as a Sierra Club member or supporter? What happens next?
Today, we celebrate. We bask in the victories so many have worked so hard to accomplish. Suncoast Sierra Club will host a celebration of the 2021 election on November 18 at a local outdoor brewery. This is an informal event and all are welcome! Then, next month, we get to work on our next major effort: electing true environmentalists across the state, including the next governor for the state of Florida. We will host volunteer training sessions for those who want to help build a pro-environment majority in our beautiful state.
Will you join us for both the celebration and for the hard work before us? Come be part of this people-powered movement!
