FWC FISH AND WILDLIFE RESEARCH INSTITUTE: Red tide toxins can accumulate in marine species

Redtide1

FWC Fish And Wildlife Research Institute issued the following announcement on Nov. 05.

Reminder!

Red tide toxins can accumulate in marine species such as oysters, clams and snails, which can lead to Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning in people who eat contaminated shellfish. It is important to follow all harvesting regulations and guidelines for your area.

Recreational harvesting of hard clams, oysters and mussels from shellfish harvesting areas is prohibited during red tide closures and therefore, these shellfish should not be eaten. Find your Shellfish Harvesting area status here: https://shellfish.fdacs.gov/seas/seas_statusmap.htm

In addition, illegally harvested shellfish and other species such as snails, which are not currently monitored and regulated for human consumption can be dangerous if consumed.
